Shopping in Mauritius

If shopping in the north of the island is undoubtedly the best, shopping centres in other parts of the island are not to be ignored…

Shopping in Mauritius can be an interesting experience. From the inevitable duty-free shops to commercial centres, handicraft shops or other shopping malls scattered all over the island - it is impossible to go back home empty-handed…

Of course prices will vary according along with the quality of goods but bargaining is possible. Those who dare venturing into crowded places will enjoy traditional, wisely and colourfully set up markets.

Made up of stone, wood and wrought iron, the Port-Louis market is an attractive place. Fruits and vegetables are sold alongside medicinal herbs, textile products and hand made goods.

As for Quatre-Bornes Market, it has also become famous for its textile fair held on Thursdays and Sundays. Given the good bargains of this place, it is always packed.

What can we say about the Mahebourg market held every Monday, by the seaside? It is a truly exciting event that attracts Mauritians from all round the island. Some even take the day off work to go there.

It is not surprising that each town and village possesses its own commercial centre where shops and boutiques sell a large variety of products. With time these places have become the focal point of shopping in Mauritius.
